The Waterwheel Inn is located in Liverton, a historic village located in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland within the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. The village is situated approximately 14 miles east of Middlesbrough and 1.5 miles south of Loftus. The village sits on a high ridge about 140 meters above sea level, right on the northern fringes of the North York Moors National Park. Liverton also sits just 1 mile south of its sister village, Liverton Mines—a separate settlement that grew rapidly in the 19th century due to the local ironstone mining boom. The post town for the area is Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

The village dates back to before the Norman Conquest, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Liuretun (meaning either "farmstead of Leofhere" or "muddy water stream"). Liverton provides immediate access to natural beauty and unique leisure facilities, serving as a direct gateway to the North York Moors National Park. The Scaling Dam Reservoir is located just to the south, offering excellent walking trails, fishing, and windsurfing. For groceries, postal services, and daily essentials, residents and visitors use the neighboring town of Loftus (1.5 miles north) or Skelton-in-Cleveland.
