Tutor Doctor franchisee commemorated at national franchise award ceremony

Melodie Watson, co-owner of Tutor Doctor Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was posthumously honoured at the 2025 BFA HSBC British Franchise Awards, where she and her husband Neil Watson were named winners of the Dynamic Duo award.

The award celebrates exceptional franchise partnerships built on collaboration, purpose and impact. For Neil, it represents a lasting tribute to a remarkable woman who helped shape a thriving education business and inspired so many around her.

“This recognition means the world to me,” said Neil. “It honours everything Melodie brought to our work – her empathy, her strength, her belief that every young person deserves to be seen and supported. This award is for her.”

Neil and Melodie launched their Tutor Doctor franchise in 2022 with one common goal – they shared a vision of creating a successful business with a genuine social impact.

Together, they built one of the fastest-growing Tutor Doctor franchises in the UK, expanding from three to 10 territories across the Northeast of England within 18 months. Their team now supports more than 750 students through tailored one-to-one tuition, delivered in partnership with 30 schools and three local education authorities.

Melodie’s background in education and safeguarding shaped every aspect of the business. She believed deeply in supporting children who sit outside of mainstream education – those facing complex challenges, often at risk of disengagement.

Her approach was grounded in compassion and professionalism. She oversaw tutor quality and student welfare but also mentored tutors personally. “Melodie created a culture that put people first,” added Neil. ‘Her influence runs through everything we do – from how we train tutors to how we measure success. She changed lives, and her impact will continue for years to come.”

The Dynamic Duo Award recognises franchisees whose connection, trust and shared purpose make them stronger together – in business and in life.

For Frank Milner, global president of Tutor Doctor, Neil and Melodie represent everything Tutor Doctor stands for. “Melodie’s legacy will live on through the lives she transformed and the values she wove into her team. We are deeply proud of what she and Neil achieved together and this recognition is a fitting tribute to their extraordinary partnership.”

Today, Neil and the rest of the Tutor Doctor team continue the work that he and Melodie began together – delivering more than 1,300 hours of tuition each month and maintaining the compassionate, high-quality support that defined Melodie’s vision.

“Melodie believed education could change everything,” concluded Neil. “We’ll keep building on that belief for her, and for the young people she cared about so much.”
