Taunton is the county town of Somerset, a market town with a minster church. Its thousand-year history includes a 10th-Century monastic foundation, Taunton Castle, which later became a priory. In the town in 1685 the Duke of Monmouth crowned himself King of England in a rebellion; also Judge Jeffreys led the Bloody Assizes in the Castle's Great Hall, the Grand Western Canal reached Taunton in 1839 and the Bristol & Exeter Railway in 1842.
Today, Taunton is known for Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset County Cricket Club and as the base of 40 Commando Royal Marines.
The Ruishton Inn is popular with locals and situate adjacent to the historic St. George’s Church. It is the only public house in the village and ideally located just 1 mile from Junction 25 of the M5 for Taunton.
