before the Swanage Railway Society reopened the railway as a heritage line in 1979. This volunteerled heritage line now contributes more than £15,000,000 a year to the Isle of Purbeck economy, and
has a national membership of 4,000 people, together with an average of 200,000 passengers per
annum.

The area is popular tourist destination with attractions such as Corfe Castle, an eleventh century
fortification which was built by William The Conqueror. There is also the seaside town of Swanage,

seeing. The town has a population of approximately 9,600.
