From John O’Groats to Land’s End for Alzheimer’s

National home care provider, Caremark have pledged to raise £100,000 in sponsorship this year for the Alzheimer’s Society through their marathon cycle challenge, riding from John O’Groats to Land’s End in September.

A team of 11 (8 Caremark riders) will travel the 1000 miles from one end of England to the other, covering 100 miles a day over ten grueling days.  Two of the riders, professional cyclists, will be riding with the Caremark team to maintain pace, motivation and monitor performance, with the eleventh team member following the pack in a support vehicle, carrying essential bike parts, first aid kits, refreshments and other essential support equipment.

Six franchisees from across the care provider’s UK network, plus two Caremark Regional Support Managers make up the Caremark JOGLE team.

To ensure the riders are cycle fit and mentally prepared for the challenge, an intensive training and nutritional programme has been drawn up, with training rides already under way. The next few months will see the team build their strength and fitness in readiness for their 1000 mile journey.

With people living longer and dementia on the increase, Caremark fully endorse the need for further research into this life-changing disease and raising essential funds for this work was an obvious starting point.  A growing proportion of the clients they care for experience some form of dementia, if not Alzheimer’s disease itself.

“Whilst we understand so much more about this disease than we did ten years ago, there is still more research needed to help us provide appropriate support and treatment for those struggling with the illness.

“We feel passionate about supporting this charity and hope that many people will support us in our mission to raise much needed funding and awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia related illnesses” says Phil Mason, JOGLE team member and Caremark Regional Support Manager.
