War Time Tea Dance for Dementia Week

Caremark (Barnsley) waltzed their way into Dementia Week by hosting a War Time High Tea Dance at the Wilthorpe & Redbrook Community Centre on Wednesday 20th May 2015, in aid of Dementia Week.

The event was formally opened by the deputy Mayor, Councillor Ken Richardson.

Guests came from far and wide and arrived to a scene reminiscent of the 1940s with lots of bunting, and wartime memorabilia on display.  Videos and music from the era were played to help re-create the feeling of the wartime years, with people joining in as they remembered their favourite songs.

There was even a professional singer who entertained everyone with memorable 1940s songs to   get the afternoon going with a swing.

Operations Director Mark McKenning said: “Everyone enjoyed a lovely sing-a-long, a tombola and raffle- we even saw a little waltzing!”

Caremark (Barnsley) support a number of clients with Alzheimer’s or other dementia related conditions.  The personalized care and support service they offer to these and other vulnerable people enables them to continue living independently at home as well as accessing social activities in their local communities.

One wartime veteran who attended said: ''It’s been a real trip down memory lane.  We have been really well looked after by the Caremark (Barnsley) girls. The best bit for me though was the singer- those were songs we used to sing. I loved them then and I love them now- it’s been brilliant!''
