Home care enables devoted couple to stay together

For older couples, the idea of being separated at some point in the future due to failing health or increasing frailty is often the spectre on the horizon and something many understandably do not wish to think about.

Advancing years and infirmity may mean that one or both partners struggle to fulfill the daily needs of the other, leaving them little choice but to consider residential care.  Yet the option of finding a place for a married couple in a care home is not always easy.  Then there is the cost involved with such a choice, often leading to the sale of the family home to fund such a move, leaving few savings for future needs.

Thankfully with the availability of good, affordable homecare such radical decisions are able to be postponed until ill health means greater nursing is needed within speciliast residential care facilities.

For Jack and Edith, having a dedicated care worker supporting them at home on a daily basis meant they could enjoy a further two happy years together in their own home amongst their memories and around their friends and family.

Their increasing need of support over the last 12 months was significant and as a result, the care team at Caremark (Barnsley) often had to respond to ad-hoc, urgent requests which they were happy to respond to and assist with.

A letter from the couple’s son following his parents’ final move into a well-chosen residential facility spoke of his grateful thanks for all the kind and dedicated care his parents had received at the hands of their care worker, Joy Glover.

Commenting in his letter, the son said: “Particular thanks must go to Joy, who has been the stalwart member of the team and who has shouldered more of the challenges than anyone else and has done so with a professionalism that must be commended”.

Having access to reliable, high quality and affordable care at home is all any of us can hope for as we move along the road to older age and increasing infirmity.  Such support will at least ensure independence and the chance to continue living a fulfilling life at home, with control over one’s daily living.  Happily companies such as Caremark (Barnsley) are able to provide this valuable service and provide for an increasing need in their community.
