Meet Raj and Raj, the husband and wife team behind Udderlicious
In 2013, they made a decision that would change their lives for ever – and has the potential to change yours, too!
Here’s the scoop…
Despite Udderlicious not being their first career, the world of ice cream wasn’t entirely new for Raj and Raj. Mr Raj’s father had actually been a franchise owner with a major ice cream brand, and he spent his childhood and teenage years helping out. While he can now look back and see how important his experiences in those years were in building the business he has today, both their lives took a very different path before Udderlicious was born.
Mr Raj previously worked as an analyst and airport planner for the British Aviation Authority. A very dynamic and rewarding role, which he loved, but he gradually became more and more disenchanted with the corporate world, and yearned to do something different. Something that challenged him in new ways, and where he could be his own boss.
While the change wasn’t immediate, he began thinking about taking a different path in life, and his thoughts returned again and again to the old family business – ice cream!
Creating a winning recipe
Both Mr and Mrs Raj have always been crazy about ice cream, but they did not want to be franchisees themselves with another brand. They wanted to create something unique and special all of their own. Something that would stand out as a business, but also become the new passion and driving force behind their lives.
So, they bought a freezer unit and started making their own ice cream! The results were mixed at first, with some great new flavours coming out, and some not so great, but after much experimentation, and even learning from ice cream masters in Reading and Nottinghamshire, they perfected their methods and were soon producing one perfectly delicious batch of ice cream after another.
Testing out their new products on friends and family, and at local events, Raj and Raj soon realised they had hit on a winning formula and started planning their very first store. They spent nearly two years carefully planning their new business, building a brand identity, and developing new flavours. In 2013, Mr Raj left his old job behind and opened the very first Udderlicious store in Islington.
The sweet taste of success
This first store was a huge success – so much so that Mrs Raj quit her job as a Deputy Head at a local school just one year later to join the business full-time! Early in 2016, North London’s newest ice cream power couple began looking for a second site, which then opened in a prime location in Covent Garden. The second store was as big a hit as the first, and a third opened in Crouch End in 2024.
With more than 10 years of business success behind them, Raj & Raj are now looking forward to the next chapter in the Udderlicious story – one they hope to write with you by their side!
