This a Grade II* listed Elizabethan black-and-white timber-framed merchant’s house, dating from circa 1584, built after the great fire of 1583. Architectural Features: Rich ornamental timber framing with carved human and animal figures. Jettied upper floors, mullioned and transomed windows, and period plaster and wood panelling. Decorative interior with original early 17th-century oak panelling, Ionic frieze, and plaster strapwork ceiling. Originally built for Thomas Churche, a wealthy linen merchant. It remained in the prominent Churche family until the late 19th century. Current Use & Recognition: Featured in The Independent's Top 50 UK Bookshops (2012).
