Owning a pizza restaurant for 25 years: Nick Losurdo on his family business

Your first bite into a slice of pizza – be it pepperoni, BBQ beef or just a simple Margherita – was probably with your parents in a warm, family-friendly restaurant.

Family is at the heart of pizza restaurants all across the country and that's something that Nick Losurdo knows very well.

His family-run pizza restaurant in Bowral, New South Wales, has been established since the late 80s/ early 90s when he made the transition from construction to pizza.

‘I was looking for a business and had looked at many when I learnt of a pizza shop for sale,’ Nick told BusinessesForSale. ‘We went to look at the business and on seeing it, my wife and I both agreed it was a great area and business and decided to purchase it.’

Located at the base of Mount Gibraltar, Bowral is well known for its boutiques and restaurants and cafés. It was recognised as a 'Booktown' in 2000 due to the abundant number of bookshops in the area, and also was home to Mary Poppins author P. L. Travers.

Bowral also hosts historical flower festival ‘Tulip Time’ in September where 100,000 tulips bloom, brightening up the town.

Nick and his wife didn’t have any particular expertise when they first bought the pizza restaurant with a bank loan, but were helped by the previous owners: ‘We learnt from the owners how to make pizza and we have continued that learning and grown the business.’

‘One of the main positives in running the pizza shop has been lots of family time when my children were little,’ Nick says. ‘Now that they’ve grown it’s being able to play golf every week; the hours are good – all evenings and not many hours, considering the return.

‘Getting to know the customers was another positive, as was being able to offer young people hours that fit in with their schooling and exams so they could earn a bit of money. And also, of course, the pleasure of knowing we are serving a quality product that people love.’

Yet, despite all these positives, the couple are selling the restaurant.

‘It has been a very good family business and we have employed family members, nephews, nieces, etc. throughout the 25 years that we’ve owned it. However there are several reasons as to why we are now selling the business.

‘One being that my wife and I are Pastors of a local church that has been growing over the past 10 years and we would like to put more time into that. Also, after 25 years of operating the business, we would like to semi-retire.’

So do you need experience to run a pizza restaurant?

‘We walked into our pizza restaurant all those years ago not knowing anything about the food industry and transitioned into the business with the previous owners’ help. Since then we have grown a great business for anyone to walk in as we did and continue growing and expanding.’
