We purchased the property in 2005 and had never been in the industry, and indeed up to the first night of opening had never poured a pint in our lives. However from an initial staff of 6, including our two selves, we now have 12.
However, as we are both now 68 years old it is time to hand over to new people with the same zest and enthusiasm that we had for a great number of these past 12 years. Unfortunately health problems including a heart attack and a collapse of my auto immune system twelve months later has had an effect on energy levels.
With regard to our customer base, like many a Village hotel or Public house it is the Hub of Village life and we have been fortunate in making many friends from the mix of customers that frequent the hotel, with many of them regular visitors.
There is no doubt however that, as the official write up says, there is ample scope for more business. Currently we don’t open for lunches, we don’t do weddings, despite the fact we are only 30 minutes from the “Wedding Capital”, of Scotland, Gretna Green, we know we don’t promote as well as we could, and we know that we could sell more rooms if we put our mind to it. But we are getting on in life and wish to take things easier.
Our Reviews from customers are in the main, fairly good with at 8.8/10 and Laterooms 4/5. These are genuine reviews as you need to have been a genuine guest before posting a review. We know our shortcomings and these are normally associated with our energy levels in getting things done. Most of the negatives are associated with the cosmetics of the building.
The property is an older build and has lots of character and in the last year we have modernised many of the windows, as well as other bits and pieces to keep it progressing.

As well as a business of course it is a home and Torthorwald is a pleasant small village, with the main town of Dumfries being only four miles away. A new private housing estate has brought extra business to the hotel. The bar area serves as a focal point for the locals and has a friendly atmosphere. We have a very regular Dumfries bus service which passes at our entrance gate going to and from Lockerbie, where we have the main west coast rail line North to Edinburgh or Glasgow, and of course all points South. The county of Dumfries & Galloway has many attractions as well as lovely beaches and countryside walks. It is only 30 minutes from the Scottish border, and only about 1.5 hours drive to the Irish ferries at Cairnryan

We are sure the new owners will enjoy being here as much as we do. The business really is worth the time to view and any potential buyer will see at first hand the opportunities that could be fulfilled.
