Developed over 18 months the website Priceatrade is a fully developed comparison and matching service for the home improvements market. Developed to the level of Gocompare or Comparethe market, Priceatrade is looking to take market leadership from Checkatrade within 12 months.
Piloted in the Bristol region results show significant growth and profit potential.
The Checkatrade online service is simply a passive Google style directory of tradesmen. Priceatrade works in the same way as the insurance comparison sites; understanding the user's details and requirements to shortlist tradesmen and show a comparison of prices to do the work.
The user selects the elements of the work needed, location and when the work is needed and Priceatrade matches and shortlists 6 tradesmen ready to do the work and their prices. Users can view responses in a personal Priceatrade inbox and view and compare each tradesman in terms of their profile, past work, memberships and their price for the work.
For the user the service offers speed (the process takes just minutes), convenience (what would have taken months of briefing, receiving and comparing quotations is now just a 2-3 minute process online), and savings (now the user can compare services on a like-for-like basis to ensure value for money, and the prices quoted by tradesmen are lower now the costs to trade are lower - see below).
For the tradesman the service provides an extremely low cost way to receive ready to go work. Low cost in 2 ways - now the tradesman doesn't need to visit the user's premises, receive a brief and submit quotes. This time consuming and costly process is simply removed. Secondly the jobs received to do have an extremely high conversion ratio - the user using the Priceatrade process has already seen the profile of the tradesmen and the price to do the work - there is little chance of the user deciding not to use the tradesman. The costs work out at approximately 20% of the normal cost to acquire through Google and the same as a cost for a lead from Checkatrade (which as we have said is a passive lead still requiring the quotations process and all the risk and cost involved).
My background - I have launched several high profile websites in the past, including openuniversity.edu and Lexmark, and one that was recently sold to Thomson Reuters.
My plan was to stop my job as a Marketing Director and launch and run this site for the next 5-7 years before selling and retiring; but my circumstances have now changed. I am happy to sell this to the right buyer for less than it cost me to build. As I say it has been tested and all of the metrics measured show it has the potential for significant profitability - I simply now don't have the time to take it to the next stage.
