Rhino Resin Bound - A More Sustainable Choice for Customers Homes, and The Environment

03 April 2024

At Rhino we know all too well how the construction industry can have a harmful impact on the environment. So, we do things differently, by offering a product to our customers that’s not only a beautiful addition to their home, but also boasts an impressive range of environmental benefits.

As a business, we strive to make better choices that help rather than hinder the environment by offering Rhino resin bound to the nation.

The threat of urban flooding is very real but can be eased by the use of permeable surfaces, such as Rhino resin bound. But, only where permeable surfaces are installed onto a full permeable base, such as the Rhino Eco base. A Rhino surface can drain up to 25 litres of water per meter, per second into the water table where ‘mother nature’ intended it to go! This type of construction is called a ‘Full Service’ installation and as such, our surfaces exceed the standards required in the SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) regulations.

Recycling is also at the heart of our sustainability goals and as such we used a high proportion of recycled materials in the construction of our permeable ‘Eco Bases’. In fact, in the average size (42 square meters) Rhino installation, we use the shredded rubber from over 200 recycled used vehicle tyres to create a permeable base. Since starting in 2008 Rhino has installed over 1,300 surfaces which is the equivalent of more than 55,000m2!

But the green credentials don’t stop there… The resin used in a Rhino surface originates from the Ricinus Communis plant (Castor Plant) – a harvested plant with an estimated Carbon Dioxide absorption of 34.6 tonnes per hectare and is therefore classified as a sustainable, renewable, ‘green’ bioresource.

This means that, so far, we have contributed to the absorption of nearly 2,000 tonnes of harmful Carbon Dioxide from the planet (that’s the annual emissions released by over 400 cars) and used over 260,000 recycled tyres in our bases.

The damage already done to the planet may be irreversible, and traditional surfacing solutions have added to this problem. In contrast, a Rhino resin bound construction has a positive impact on the environment and the effects of climate change.

At Rhino we believe, as a business, it is important to move with the needs of the environment and we continually strive to make the best choices to ensure we are doing the best we can for our planet.
