As lockdown continues, OSCAR Pet Foods reflect on why the challenges of 2020 present franchisees with confidence for a bright and successful future.

A winning combination of pet care being an essential business and franchising maintaining its long-held reputation for being resistant to recession provided a positive start to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Annual figures released by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) revealed a dramatic rise in pet acquisition – highlighting the important role that pets now play in the wellbeing of many individuals and families. With self-isolation and work-from-home routines stimulating further desire for much-needed companionship, an already thriving pet population continues to increase.

Reaching new customers was a rewarding challenge. Our franchise network plays such an important part of OSCAR and, like us, they have as much passion and drive as we do in looking after each and every customer in their own local area assisted by reliable backup and support from Head Office. Covid-19 definitely reinforced our teamwork.

We also learnt new ways of keeping in touch with customers and franchisees whilst staying socially distanced! We remained focused on planning deliveries but although online purchasing speeded up ordering everyone appreciated a little bit of normality. So, with our specialised local business model, we continued to manage safely distanced delivery; after all, pet owners still looked to us for the valuable nutritional and behavioural advice we provide for their pet family – especially for all those smaller queries they’d rather not take to the vet. 

Unexpected changes often produce new and better ways of living and customers have experienced the rewarding nature of supporting local business – enjoying its benefits (both financially and emotionally) in a personal way.
