The Courtyard Deli is an established delicatessen and café located in the heart of Falmouth’s popular shopping and restaurant district. It had already been trading on the same site for 7 years and had a good established customer base consisting of locals and tourists when we purchased it as going concern in March 2015.
The core aspects of the business as it operates currently are:
- A thriving cafe with a daily menu of high quality, nutritious hot and cold prepared foods to eat-in or take-away, with vegetarian, vegan and coeliac options regularly available. We prepare everything ourselves on site from our renowned sourdough to the puff pastry used in our popular pastel de natas.
- A broad range of deli products for retail (of British, European, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern origins) which aren’t widely available elsewhere in Cornwall as well as the best local produce Cornwall currently offers.
- A selection of food related homewares and gift items;
- A range of catering solutions, including onsite private hire and pop-up events, wedding and party catering, a private chef service, ready meal solutions for holiday makers, and corporate event catering.
- A wholesale business producing Cornish Macarons. Currently selling via other retailers across the South West.
The cafe has seating for up to 60 people across three distinct areas. Upstairs comprises 30 covers set across a variety of sized tables. Most popular during and autumn and winter months and providing a perfect venue for our private hire and dinner night pop-ups.
The lower floor comprises the shop, main deli counter, serving area and kitchen with an additional 4 tables which can seat 8-10 people. Popular with customers with mobility problems who don't wish to tackle the stairs and our regulars who pop in for a chat as much as a coffee.
The third area is the courtyard consists of an additional 5 tables seating up to 20 people. Extremely popular when the weather is fine and well-known in Falmouth as a tranquil and sunny haven from the busy high street, especially during the hectic summer months.
In the Deli itself we supply an exciting range of products with appeal to local customers and tourists. We decided not to only focus on Cornish produce as we saw that many other shops were stocking the same Cornish products.Instead we offer customers access to more unusual products from further afield which are not widely available in other stores locally.
Via the website we offer a wide range of offsite catering options from buffets and deli platters to ‘take-away’ meals which customers can re-heat at at home. The size of the jobs have ranged from a couple of picnic hampers up to a wedding for 100 people.
We have also seen our private chef jobs increase each year. These are more regular during the summer months when holiday homes rentals are busier but occasionally we have requests locally to support family events like christenings or big birthdays. Clients usually request high quality, local food but in a relaxed and informal manner.

The deli benefits from a convenient town centre location, whilst slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the main high street, being located up a small passageway opposite the former site of Marks and Spencer. In addition, the deli shares its discreet site with the Beerwolf Books Freehouse, a locally renowned pub and bookshop which promotes a degree of shared custom.
The Deli isn't currently open in the evenings, however previous owners operated tapas evenings every Wednesday to Saturday nights which were well received. Our evening pop-up events have also been really popular. Sundays are also another trading opportunity which we haven't exploited due to personal circumstances.
The Cornish Macaroon wholesale business was launched in May 2018. We recognised that the Deli was able to provide certain types wholesale products that were currently not being produced within the South West. Just 8 months on, the macaroons are getting really great feedback and the packaging (designed & illustrated by local partners) have also been very well received. The opportunity to develop this part of the business within the local market, and even to consider further expansion, is considerable.
After some initial market research there was little evidence of any competition within the South West from any other company. There are a couple of smaller producers operating at local food fairs, but we don’t believe their quality or appeal rival ours.
Macaroons are an easily scalable product which can be stored frozen for up to 12 months. This has allowed us to produce them during quieter periods and then store them off site.
We believe this area of the business has the most significant growth potential. More information is available on request.
The Courtyard Deli & Kitchen has established a strong niche position within Falmouth. It doesn’t try to compete head on with the many other suppliers of local Cornish products, instead focusing on providing a more diverse range of ingredients from further afield than is typically available in Cornish shops and supermarkets.
In our minds, the offering at the deli needs to be as much about the added value of excellent customer service, superior product knowledge and advice as it is about the high-quality produce and we are lucky enough to have a really strong team with clear passion, product knowledge and enthusiasm for the business as a whole.
Coming ourselves from a professional chef and hospitality backgrounds we wanted to offer something a little different from the other lunch venues. From the outset we made the decision to produce by hand on-site everything on our menu, where possible using the high-quality ingredients we have available to us in the Deli.
Being able to communicate to our customers that the sourdough they are enjoying with their meal or the range of cakes and sweet treats available are all made by us in the kitchen onsite sets us apart from many other lunch venues and is something our customers really value.
Personal circumstances are drawing us out of county for a while whilst we tackle another big project, so we are in a position where we are looking to sell the business a little earlier than we wish to as we feel there is still so much opportunity in the vibrant town of Falmouth and the continuing popularity of Cornwall.
