How to buy a campground

Campground owner Vikram Jashapara discusses the process of buying

We'd met with Vikram to find out what he'd done before owning a campsite, why he was attracted to the business and how he went about buying it.

On how he came to buy the site...

When I bought the house initially, the house was bought with a lot of land and I came from London, so to me, to have a lot of green land was amazing. I stumbled on my property by accident. I was actually looking for Potters Barn and took the wrong junction and ended up in St. Albans.

But because I was looking for a house, I thought I'd stop off and when I saw this house - this is just perfect. With all the land, I just thought "that's it" - I had to have it, and for the last 10 years all I've done is maintain the land and look after it. I used to play golf on it, but I was so bad at golf I had to do something else with it, hence the camping.

On costs...

There is no set up cost to run a campsite, all you need to do is just have a little bit of savvy, you have to be a little bit on the customer service side, you've got to be available for the customer 24 hours a day and getting a bit of land. Running a campsite is so easy because all you've got to do is get the right marketing in place, and then people will come to you.

If they like you, they'll post good reviews and if you get good reviews, more people will come to you. And it will just gradually build up. Within the last 6 weeks, the most people we've had was over 200 people. Which is a lot for something that was set up 6 weeks ago.
