Wyken Wyken Posts: 59	17/04/2008 08:51:02 I have created an Excel spreadsheet to assist me with working out the profitability of a business. It is proving to be a useful tool and enables the user to enter details of the business, e.g, turnover, gross pofit, running costs, overheads ect and works out the net worth, net profit ectof a business. It's a simple but useful spreadsheet that will make the user aware of the need to turn over every stone to collect information and encourage the user to consider every aspect of the running costs of a business and how these costs reduce the net profits. There is also a section on staffing costs. This section allows the user to see how net profit changes if the buyer removes staff, reduces hours ect, and again how this effects the net profit. Wyken Wyken Posts: 59	17/04/2008 11:12:55 Ah, we seem to have stumbled across an obstacle here. This site does not allow the exchange of email addresses for some reason. Anyone know a way around this? Perhaps if you leave out .com or @ and instead type dotcome or 'at' it may work?

Here's what the spreadsheet can do: Works out G/P, N/P, staff wages, net worth of tangible assets, depreciation of assets, overheads, i.e., rent, rates, insurance, utilities, i.e., gas, elec., phone, water ect, takes into account age of assets and their replacement values, cost of maintenance and any maintenance contracts for assets, whether the assets are on lease ect. It then calculates all these costs and deducts them from the G/P giving a clearer N/P position. It calculates the recoup period of the initial investment and offers numerous ways to carry out 'what if' scenarios and how those scenarious effect the N/P. Designing this spreadsheet made me think about many of the possible costs incurred in running a business and made me think about the types of questions I should be asking a vendor, such as length of lease, review date of lease, if a newable lease is guaranteed ect as well as questions regarding staff, ie. are employment contracts in place, length of service, hourly rates ect. I shall print off the spreadsheet and use it as a prompt for information gathering when I start to visit potential businesses for sale. Wyken Wyken Posts: 59	02/05/2008 18:38:48 I shall respond to everyone requesting a copy of the spreadsheet in due course. At present the speadsheet is still a work in progress and I have added several more features to it including VAT analysis. The thinking behind this addition is that the VAT figures are also a source of financial details that will varify if the stated G/P is true. That is to say, if a business has paid a given amount over to the VAT man then the G/P is easily calculated. If a business claims a certain G/P then by taking this figure and entering it into the spread sheet the amount payable in the form of VAT is also calculated. If the two figures do not agree there is a problem! Please be patient.
