A letting agency franchise is a very similar business to an estate agency, but it only lets and manages the properties, rather than actually selling them. In recent years the buy-to-let market exploded, fuelling a growth in the letting market. And increasingly, people want to stay independent for longer, delaying their first home purchase and renting for longer. The letting market is more recession-proof than real estate agency, as the market for renting doesn’t suffer a similar slowdown during downturns. Often, properties constructed in buoyant economic times will become difficult to sell in a downturn, leaving developers with little option to lease them on a temporary basis.

The demands of running a letting agent franchise are similar to running an estate agent – you need sales skills and a willingness to work beyond normal office hours to show prospective tenants around properties. Where you live is an extremely important life choice, so people are circumspect about who they deal with, and letting agency franchises have an edge insofar as they’re often respected high street names.
